Great Day for Flying

The officers of MAAG and key leaders of the Halstead Fly-in met today to talk about ways to make next years event even better. Of course, we mixed in a good dose of food and flying. We'll bore you with the meeting details next month. Here are some pictures of the flying fun.
Steve Quick offered rides in his Fairchild. Thanks!
We also had a sneak preview of the 2009 Halstead Fly-In video by Roxane Turner. Outstanding, as always!

MAAG Halstead Fly- in Winners

Best in Show: Jim Younkin, Springdale, AR - 1997 Mullicoupe
Best Classic: Terry Burger, Salina, KS - 1949 Luscombe T-8F
Best Antique: Bill Koeling, Great Bend, KS - 1938 Cessna Airmaster C-145
People Choice: Jim Younkin, Springdale, AR - 1997 Mullicoupe

You may be wondering what a Mullicoupe is. It is a smaller version of Mr. Mulligan, using an R-985 instead of the 1340, and only has 2 seats. Jim Younkin and Bud Dake conceived it at Blakesburg in 1982, and Dake loved Monocoupes, thus the tail and aft fuselage design. Special thanks to Steve Turner and his fellow judges for selecting these outstanding airplanes.

Great Day for Halstead Fly-In

The weather was pretty nice for the fly-in this year. Temperatures eventually reached the low 90's, but a strong southerly wind helped keep everyone from over-heating. Fortunately, the wind did not inhibit folks from flying in to Halstead, taking part in the parade of planes, and showing off their low level navigational skills.

An official video will eventually be compiled, but until that is finished, we'll post a few still photos and short video clips I took. The "official" video folks got much better footage than what I could get with my camera, so hopefully this will suffice for now.

The day began with a pancake breakfast. Many folks pitched in last night and today to do the cooking and cleaning, staffing the gate, marshaling airplanes, selling T-shirts, judging airplanes, donating money or other consumables, and many other tasks. Thanks to all who helped in some way.

Airplanes Everywhere

A view down the flight line. There was about 30 airplanes in attendance.

After a long flight, a few pilots needed assistance.

More airplanes!

Red Sky at Night, Pilot's Delight

A beautiful red sunset signalled to all that tomorrow will be a great day for a fly-in. Hope to see you there!

Halstead Party

Tonight was the annual MAAG party at Halstead prior to the big fly-in tomorrow. It was warm, but a nice southern breeze helped cool things down, especially after sunset. Delicious hamburgers and hotdogs were expertly grilled along with many delicious side dishes. After dinner, the 1930's movie "Test Pilot" played on the big screen.

A great time by all!

Good food and plenty of airplane converstaion!
To the right is the making of a music video. More to come on that!
