21st Annual Marion, Indiana Fly/In Cruise/In

We pointed our flying club Bonanza east from Kansas late last week to Marion, Indiana for the 21st annual Fly/In Cruise/In and were not disappointed.  The weather for the event on Saturday morning September 3 was ideal.  Light winds and pleasant temperatures, at least by Kansas standards.  This event includes a pancake breakfast with all proceeds supporting the Marion High School band.  It looked like several thousand were there to enjoy the all you could eat pancakes and sausage.

Several hundred airplanes flew in for the event which ran from 7:00 AM  to 2:00 PM.  There was also a generous display of antique and classic cars and tractors.  One of the more unusual vehicles on hand was a flock of Pulse Autocycles, designed by famed aircraft designer Jim Bede (see pictures below).

A 1929 New Standard D-25 flown by Ted Davis was on hand hopping biplane rides for a minimal fee.  I took the entire family!  There were also 2 Huey helicopters from the American Huey 369 Organization giving rides to anyone wishing to become a member of the not-for-profit organization.

It was obviously the entire community gets behind this event through their volunteer efforts.  Ray Johnson is the event coordinator and the proud owned of a 1946 Aeronca Chief that has won it all at Oshkosh a few years back.  Keep up the great effort Ray along with all your volunteers!  We'll be back next year, hopefully with a restored Stinson instead of the Bonanza.  It may take a little longer to get there, but it will be worth it.  Mark your calendars for next year, too.  It is the Saturday morning of Labor Day weekend.

After 21 years, they know haw to serve tasty pancakes fast!

Several classic airplane on display with a
mix of old tractors and cars sprinkled in.

More airplanes to enjoy looking at.

The New Standard D-25 coming in for a landing.

Good looking Stinson 108-3.

The Huey taking rides.  Note the many modern
airplanes on the ramp that flew in to check out the action.

A gaggle of Pulse Autocylcles.

Ray Johnson's award winning Aeronca Chief.

Nathan and I both got a Pulse ride from Judy Johnson.
What a kick!  Nathan has been searching the
Internet for more info every since.

The New Standard D-25 managed to take all of us at
the same time!  What a barnstorming airplane
it must have been during its heyday!
